Henry S. Tanner, in the preface to his " A new American atlas, 1823," says: "Notwithstanding the elevated rank which the state of Virginia maintains in the American union, her im- portance in a political and agricultural point of view, and the intelligence and learning which distinguish many of her citi- zens, the geography of the great state is suffered to remain far behind that of most of her sister states." With the exception of Madison's map, which is rendered nearly obsolete by the innumerable improvements and changes which a busy and enterprising population are perpetually effect- VIRGINIA CARTOGRAPHY.
