An ? that tends somewhat towards / regularly precedes final / and i before a voiced consonant, as in * fee ', ' feed ' (pro- nounced fii, fiid?) When i is unaccented, as in the last syllable of sitl ('city') or niktd ('naked'), it is slightly flattened and retracted, approaching e in sound. Compare Sweet's ' Primer of Phonetics ', pages 15, 74, and 77. 13. ^: as in 'fate', 'great', 'straight'.
