He was, when the misfortune befel him, engaged to a very pleasing, but of course very young, girl, for the miners and minermw all marry early. If I remember right, their banns had been published. Her friends and who could blame them ? wished to break off the match, but Mary was staunch to her vows, and happily the large family which the prudent ones prophesied never arrived ; they have only two little girls, who are well out of the way, so that the mother is enabled to resume her occupation at ...the bal. Peter himself can do a few things dig the ground for potatoes, and take the potatoes from the ground, &c. With the help of his little girls ; and he can walk to Helston, with their guidance, in order to receive his first pay of one shilling a week. His income is further eked out by the voluntary contributions of his brother miners. At their invitation, he attends the surrounding mines on pay-days, hat in hand, and receives without solicitation whatever they can afford to drop into it. I know this, because little Jennefer is sometimes kept home from the garden, and Mary from the school, to " lead father.
