" Yet it is evident that a correspondent can free himself from administering to this curio- sity and speculation, and even from headquar- ters ; and if he has so great a desire to keep an eye on the battle-field a firm loving eye, capable of seeing through the false glare he may expose the way in which art and poetry and newsvendors veil the infamous reality of war; their romantic phrases inducing even wives and mothers and daughters to sacrifice at its altar, without so much as admitting the thought that it is something that ought to be protested against.
