What reading level is Warcross book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

All of us see a Warcross menu pop up in our view. If Asher can show us all the same thing, then we are linked on the same network during training. Ren had been walled behind his shields during the party, but maybe now, if we’re all linked on the same network, I can find a way to get into some of Ren’s data. Of everyone’s personal data.
As I ponder this, Asher taps the option that says Training Grounds. The world around us fades into black, as if I’d closed my eyes. I blink several times. The
...n, a new world materializes around us.
This is a Warcross world I’ve never seen before. It must be exclusive to the professional teams. It looks like a whitewashed world, like it’s a virtual world only half finished, its surfaces unpainted and without texture. We are standing in the middle of a white sidewalk, next to a white street crowded with white cars, with white columned buildings towering all around us. When I look farther down the street, I can see a glimpse of a whitewashed jungle, the trees and their trunks the color of ivory, the grass white as it grows at the edge of the city streets.

Marie Lu is a master writer. Lu’s writing has become a part of my life. It has become my oxygen and blood and I must read more in order to live. I just need more! It is such a good thing that I still have the Legend series and The Young Elites series to read!

In Warcross, Emika Chen is a hacker from New York City and also happens to be a bounty hunter. Life right now isn’t looking so bright for her, but just like everyone else, she logs onto Warcross to forget about life and its hardships every once in a while. During one of the biggest times of the year, Emika mistakenly enters herself into the game while trying a hack. Due to this inconvenience, Emika is surprisingly hired to find another hacker that could be dangerous inside the game while being a player in the tournament.

Warcross is amazing in every single way. The world is described beautifully and makes you wish you were there. The characters are wide and diverse. I have loved every single piece that was used to create this story. Lu has also managed to create a gaming system that is completely original, and at the same time, seem almost familiar. Since I was confused about some information on Warcross, I decided to write some stuff that could help clarify some information:

Each team consists of 5 members:
Captain – Leader of the Team
Architect – Manipulated the Landscapes
Shield – Protects the Team/Defense
Thief – Collects and Finds Power Ups
Fighter – Fights the Other Team/Offense
The teams play in a Capture-the-Flag like game, aiming to get the other team’s Artifact.
I do not think everything in this story could have been done any differently. Every single detail was carefully put in. I loved reading about some of the characters’ backgrounds and personality. Even the romance was just the right amount. There was not a single piece of romance that was felt rushed in. The romance was gradually progressing, but did not start until later on in the story. I could even tell you, I was going for this romance. It was that good and that is coming from someone who does not read much into romance.

In the story, Lu manages to create a mystery surrounding the game and characters. There’s another hacker that is apparently dangerous to the game and players. This is why Emika was hired to track this person down. Although this person would be someone you would hate, I just loved this character because I was constantly trying to guess who this person is. I went from guessing character to character until a specific detail was revealed and it clicked. I knew who it was. Personally, I would say this story is not predictable at all, but you may be able to predict a few things if you are a quick thinker. Although I was able to predict who this hacker was eventually, I was never able to predict the ending and that ending was truly mind-blowing. I have no clue how the next book is going to be as it could mean anything can happen. ANYTHING!

Overall, Warcross is simply an amazing book, unlike anything I have ever read and became an instant favorite. A lot of people are thinking of Ready Player One, but I have never read that book and therefore, cannot vouch for that. If you are hesitant about getting this book, hesitate no more, get it and read it. Marie Lu is an amazing author and it is something that you need to experience.

I really liked Warcross! I liked Emika, and the world she lived in.

Emika is a great character, and she really is a girl just trying to survive. It’s obvious Warcross means a lot to her, and it’s a pretty important part of her life. A glitch really changed everything for her, and as it would turn out, things do not go the way she though they would.

Emika’s world was interesting, she does struggle. But one of the things that kept me from truly loving Warcross was that the world (and Warcross) wasn’t explained very well. I wasn’t quite clear what Warcross was or how it was played. Obviously, it’s virtual reality, but it didn’t make a lot of sense to me. Maybe I wasn’t reading the book well enough, or maybe it didn’t make a lot of sense because I’m not a gamer. I did like the descriptions when Emika and her team was actually going up against another team, and I thought that was well done.

Maybe I just wish that it translated to the rest of the book.

Worldbuilding aside, I did like Emika’s team as well. Something about them reminded of the group of people we see in Six Of Crows. It might be an odd comparison, and I’m not at all sure why these two reminded me of each other, but I’m just going to go with it. I do wish we knew more about them. Emika is not at all concerned about what’s going on with them, so because she doesn’t know a lot about them, we don’t know a lot about them. I wish we did, but hopefully that will change in the next book.

Warcross was entertaining and fun and I feel like I went through it pretty fast. I did understand some of the motivations behind certain characters, especially Hideo. And he especially had this really interesting balance of good and bad, so I am curious to see how his story plays out. Him, more than anyone else. As interesting as he is, part of me doesn’t like him.

I can’t wait to read the sequel to see where things go!

For the millions who log in every day, Warcross isn’t just a game—it’s a way of life.

The obsession started ten years ago and its fan base now spans the globe, some eager to escape from reality and others hoping to make a profit. Struggling to make ends meet, teenage hacker Emika Chen works as a bounty hunter, tracking down Warcross players who bet on the game illegally. But the bounty hunting world is a competitive one, and survival has not been easy. To make some quick cash, Emika takes a risk and hacks into the opening game of the international Warcross Championships—only to accidentally glitch herself into the action and become an overnight sensation.

Convinced she’s going to be arrested, Emika is shocked when instead she gets a call from the game’s creator, the elusive young billionaire Hideo Tanaka, with an irresistible offer. He needs a spy on the inside of this year’s tournament in order to uncover a security problem . . . and he wants Emika for the job. With no time to lose, Emika’s whisked off to Tokyo and thrust into a world of fame and fortune that she’s only dreamed of. But soon her investigation uncovers a sinister plot, with major consequences for the entire Warcross empire.
