Seven of the 53 in use were in Newton and ten in villages. Thirty- six were in the open country. By denominations 14 were Methodists, 12 Congregational-Christian, 7 Church of Christ, 7 Baptist, 4 Catholic, 3 United Brethren, 3 Presbyterian, 1 Lutheran. The Newton and village churches had seating capacity of 3, 770, but report- ed only 2, 667 members and only 3 felt that church attendance was ex- cellent.
