After leaving the main gate of the Barracks grounds, a short walk on 4^ St. to M St., S. will bring the tourist to the line of the Anacostia and Poto- mac Horse R. R., and proceed to the Navy Yard.
This line crosses the James Cre k Canal, walled on both sides, 6' deep, and is used by boats laden with wood, stone and sand. It also forms the out- let of the great Tiber Sewer, which may be seen at the N. end. Across the Anacosta, crowning the hill is thejjGovernment Hospital for the Insane.
