The board never got to know Les; he was in Sacramento all the time the legislature was in session, and here I was as part of my official duties, attending every meeting of the board, and representing Mr. Wittschen when he was absent. To the best of my recollection, Les never attended a board meeting prior to Mr. Wittschen 's retirement.
One morning I ...had a telephone call from Leroy K. Hamman, who was then president of the board, saying that he would like to see me in his office in the Central Bank building in Oakland. So I went to see him, and he at that time offered me the position and I accepted it. I had made no attempt to try to get it. So that's the way it happened.
[When I returned to my office I phoned my wife and then told Les. He had no comment then, nor did he ever discuss the matter with me personally. I took office on November 1, 1947.
