A strip of Eden shale several miles long and less than half a mile wide extends in a northeast-southwest direction through the center of the county. These rocks lie in an almost horizontal position, and except for the faults that have brought the Eden shale into contact with the Lexington limestone they have been subjected to very little disturbance.
The principal water-bearing forma...tion in the county is the Lexing- ton limestone, which supplies many springs, some of them of large size, and most of the drilled and dug wells. The waters of this lime- stone are of two kinds — hard waters, with short underground courses, yielded by the shallow wells and by practically all of the springs; and mineral waters, usually alkaline, many of them containing salt, sul- phur, and other mineral matter in noticeable quantities, supplied by many of the drilled wells in different parts of the coimty.
