What reading level is Waymarks in the Wilderness book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
Its origin and date are unknown. 1857. ] The Vulgate. 271 There is, however, every reason to believe that it was exe- cuted in the first half of the second century; for it is referred to by Tertullian before the close of that century. For two hundred years, it was regarded in the West with almost the same veneration which was paid to the Septuagint in the East. It was afterwards so completely superseded by the Vulgate, that, as a whole, it has perished, and we are ac- quainted only with fragmen...ts of it, found in various authors. The corruptions of the Septuagint led Origen to under- take a revision of it : and his amended Greek text became the Textus Receptus ; or, the received text. The Latin Bible, al^o, underwent many corruptions in the hands of transcri- bers ; and ; even where it was not corrupted, it was impor- tant that it should be conformed to the amended Greek version. Towards the close of the fourth century, accord- ingly, Jerome, one of the four great Latin Fathers, and the patron of monastic institutions, undertook to revise the Old Italic, at the suggestion, and under the patronage, of Dama- sus, bishop of Rome.
