To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
Remember your responsibility is to drill the hole properly and develop the w^ater that you encounter. MIXING CUTTINGS WITH BENTONLTE In the good old days, drillers used anything from mud to inner tubes to keep the hole from caving and keep circulation until the casing ^vas set. Bentonite w^as often mixed ^th anything, including drill cuttings, because it ^vas commonly used in the oil fields and ^th mud rotary rigs. Older, experienced drillers still w^ant to use a mix of cuttings and bentonite t...o seal the upper 18 feet of a ^vater ^vell or to puddle the mix behind driven casing. Ho^vever, Montana's rules pro- hibit mixing cuttings mth bento- nite. Why? Because during the 1980s much testing of sealants w^as done. The results w^ere variable, but seem to indicate that, al- though neither neat cement nor pure bentonite ^vas perfect, they ^vere indeed the best under most circumstances. Recent testing indicates that mixing cuttings ^th bentonite does not substan- tially affect hydration and seal- ing; how^ever, under certain high pH and temperature conditions, bentonite does not hydrate effectively, particularly to shut out hydrocarbons.
