It is not an uncommon thing to see great groups of trees which have sunk into the water, and the low, marshy grounds seem to extend back a long distance. The gunpowder willow grows most luxuriantly, and the Ameri- can trumpet flower, with its scarlet blossoms and graceful foliage, twines around the thick undergrowth. Very seldom are the magnolia and palm seen in this locality, although the crape myrtle appears in nearly every little garden attached to the humblest negro hut. Alexandria, Louisia...na, 350 miles from New Orleans, and half way to Shreveport, is situated on a high and commanding bluff, and was a thriving city before the war. The Military State University was here located, and General W. T. Sherman was the superintendent up to 1861. Alexandria was a central depot for corn, cotton, and sugar, whence it was shipped to New Orleans and other points, and had large warehouses and comfortable dwelling-houses. The institute building was accidently destroyed by fire some two years since, and the students are now educated at Baton Rouge.
