As I walked toward my own tent my face was to- ward Petersburg, and I just chanced to see a skyrocket shoot heavenward somewhat to the right of Petersburg.
Knowing it must be a signal, I stopped and watched for developments. Almost immediately there was a blaze of light all along our lines that confronted Petersburg, and the flash was followed by a terrific roar of cannon that came to us like reverberating thunder. Af- ter the first volley the firing became irregular, but was kept up without cessation.
