In fact, white-lead paste is com- monly applied to severe burns. But in the stomach it is dissolved and gets into the system and it stays there, and when enough of it accumulates it causes... lead poisoning. A sudden attack caused by swallowing a lot of some lead compound is not serious; it causes temporary trouble, but that is all; but the gradual and long-continued accumulation may cause paralysis or even death.
Among the nine or ten millions of people in the State of New York there are only one or two deaths per year — sometimes none — 52 White-Lead from this cause, so It may be spoken of as a rare disease; the writer has never met a master painter who regarded it as a serious matter, and a majority of master-painters have never seen a case, although it is almost confined to house-painters.
