In an article on Oratory in Scrib- ner's Magazine (June 1901) he speaks as follows: "In my opinion, the two most important things that a young man can do to make himself a good public speaker are: First, constant and careful written translations from Latin or Greek into English. Second, practice in a good debating society. * * * The value of the practice of translation from Latin and Greek into English in getting command of good English style, in my judgment can hardly be stated too strongly.
