‘I swam all the way,’ I blurted out. I felt myself huge with pride. This was the first person I’d told. I swam the whole day and I wasn’t scared.’ I suddenly felt really happy. I wanted to talk and talk. I wanted to boast. And he was soaked. ‘They said you were dead.’ He squatted down, took my hand and squeezed it. Water ran off him. ‘They said they searched this island three days ago and the other islands around.
