The platform looked ironical thatnight, still decked with bunting, limp and drenched now by the rain, andlit up by the flames of the burning town. We reached Villa Viola about11. 30 p. M. It was to have been a rendezvous, but there was no one there. Only the rain still falling. About midnight we entered an empty house, and threw ourselves down upon the floor to sleep.

...en we were hurriedly awakened. TheItalians had orders to set fire to the house. Meanwhile Savogna, ourCanadian Italian Corporal, had just returned from scouting for us, andreported that parties from the other Batteries were in a house half amile away. We marched off again through pouring rain, our path lit up bythe flames, which in places thrust their long tongues right across theroad. The wind blew clouds of smoke in our faces. The air was full ofthe roaring of the fires, the crackle of blazing woodwork, the crash ofhouses falling in, the loud explosions of ammunition dumps and petrolstores, which now and again for a few seconds lighted up the whole nightsky for miles around with a terrific glare, and then died down again.
