At first the twigs were planted round the tree in a circle, with a clear space round the stem, but it was found that the rabbits somehow got inside, and the precaution was thus of no avail. Even the string is scarcely necessary, at all events after a very few days, as the twigs cling so close to the trunk of the tree that a rabbit would find its task no easier by cutting... the string. There is no pressure whatever round the stem of the tree, while the protection is so complete that the tree is absolutely impregnable to the attacks of this destructive vermin. The wood in which these young Douglasii trees are planted is a perfect rabbit warren, almost every footstep disturb- ing them in dozens, and sending them in haste to their burrows in the soft dry sand ; and, although we searched most diligently, no trace whatever could be found of the slightest damage having been done.
