In carrying out this plan we try to find men who are already skilled and able to perform the task set. It frequently happens, however, that the num- ber of such men is insufficient and it takes time to train the unskilled to a proper de- gree of efficiency; but with a bonus as an in- centive, and a proper instructor, a very fair proportion of the unskilled finally succeed in performing a task that was at first entirely beyond them.

As they become more skilled, they form better habits of work, lose less time and become more reliable. Their health improves, and the improvement in their gen- eral appearance is very marked. This im- provement in health seems to be due to a more regular and active life, combined with a greater interest in their work; for it is a well-known fact that work in which we are in- terested and which holds our attention with- out any effort on our part, tires us much less than that we have to force ourselves to do.
